EDISON CENTER
USEPA Brownfields Assessment & Cleanup Grants
Redevelopment and Repurpose of an Old Building Thanks to Innovative Abatement
PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The former LG&E facility had become obsolete and was sold to Weyland Ventures, Inc. for redevelopment. The large, three-story building was identified as heavily contaminated with asbestos, lead based paint and mold. USEPA grant funds were used for the assessment of the site and in the application for USEPA revolving Loan Cleanup funds. Weyland Ventures hired Bob Perkins to oversee the abatement of the site. Many unique abatement measures were needed to cost-effectively remediate the site, including the use of walnut shells to remove the lead-based paint without damaging the existing walls. Health and safety measures were intensive due to the large size and age of the facility. In is now fully redeveloped and serves as City offices for over 400 employees, called the Edison Center.
